Asthma
is a lung disease that has three different characteristics: airway
obstruction, airway inflammation, and airway hyperresponsiveness.
Asthma requires continuous medical care. Proper medications and dosages
are important to the management of asthma. These medications include
anti-inflammatory agents, which stop the development of inflammation
in the lungs, inflammatory agents, and bronchodilators.
Does Milk Give You a Stomachache?
If so, consider yourself among the millions of Americans who believe
they have a food allergy. Surprisingly though, relatively few of us
are truly allergic to milk. Most of the time, the problem is a milk
or lactose intolerance. The difference may sound like little more
than a play on words, but for the unlucky few, the distinction is
a matter of life or death.
Milk Allergy
True milk allergy is an abnormal immunologic response in which the
body's immune system overreacts to milk.
Lactose Intolerance
Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest significant amounts
of lactose.
One important difference between milk allergy and lactose intolerance
is that lactose intolerance is not a life-threatening condition. In
fact, most people with lactose intolerance often can consume small
amounts of milk without experiencing any symptoms. Those with true
milk allergy often have symptoms after consuming even microscopic
amounts of milk. Those with milk allergies must avoid milk altogether.

Some Do's and Dont's
To Follow During the Pollen and Mold Season for Allergy Sufferers:
Do keep windows closed at night; use air-conditioning, which
cleans, cools, and dries the air.
Do minimize early morning activity when pollen is most usually
emitted - between 5 am and 10 am.
Do keep your car windows closed when you are traveling in a
car.
Do stay indoors when the pollen count or humidity is high,
and on windy days when dust and pollen are whipped about.
Do take a vacation during the height of the pollen season to
a place more pollen-free, such as the beach or the sea.
Do take the medications prescribed by your allergist.
Don't mow lawns or be around freshly cut grass; mowing stirs
up pollens and molds.
Don't rake leaves; they also stir up molds.
Don't hang sheets or clothing out to dry, as pollens and molds
may collect in these items.
Don't grow too many indoor plants; wet dirt causes molds to grow.

in your area. |
