George
A. Farber, M.D.
Patients
want to know more about Dr. Farber on a personal and career interest note.
Dr.
Farber was born in St. Petersburg, Florida in 1934. As an infant,
he was a passenger on the first nonstop flight from Miami to New
York City. He attended the University of Florida his freshman
year, and was on the swimming, baseball and boxing teams. He then
transferred to LSU where he completed his undergraduate studies
in 1955. Upon graduation, he attended LSU School of Medicine and
graduated in 1959. Dr. Farber interned at Southern Baptist Hospital.
He also trained in Ob-Gyn and general surgery, and worked with
Dr. Walter Becker of the Mahorner Clinic.
At LSU,
Dr. Farber had been a commander of the Air Force ROTC, and he
continued in the Reserves throughout medical school. In 1960,
Dr. Farber was called to active duty in the U.S. Air Force. After
completing a training program at the Aerospace School of Medicine
in San Antonio, Texas, he spent three years as a flight surgeon,
rising to the level of chief flight surgeon at Luke Air Force
Base in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1963, he began a residency in dermatology
at LSU School of Medicine. In 1966, Dr. Farber was sent to Vietnam
as a dermatologist - the first dermatologist sent to Vietnam by
any branch of the service. Dr. Farber has received the Bronze
Star, four combat flying medals, and numerous other citations
for his service.
When he returned from Vietnam, he spent three years as chief of
dermatology at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi and as a
consultant to the Surgeon General for dermatology for the southeastern
United States. In 1970, Dr. Farber began his association with
Dr. Burks, which led to a full partnership. He also served on
the faculty of Tulane School of Medicine, and from 1981-1983,
he served as Interim Chairman of the Department of Dermatology
while the head of the department was on sabbatical.
Dr. Farber was one of the founders of the American Society for
Dermatologic Surgery, which has become the major international
society for dermatologic surgery. He held many offices and directorships
with that organization, including the presidency. He was also
one of the founding members of the American Academy of Cosmetic
Surgery, and an officer, director, and examiner for the American
Board of Cosmetic Surgery.
He held these positions until 1990, when he relinquished his positions
in favor of more youthful candidates in order to ensure a continuum
of qualified leadership for that organization. In 1990, Dr. Farber
was one of the four founders of the American Academy of Aesthetic
and Restorative Surgery. He is the president at this time. This
organization is limited to specialists with board certification
in five areas of specialization, and is a medical non-profit organization
dedicated to teaching in aesthetic and restorative surgery. Dr.
Farber represents the specialty of dermatology in that organization.
Dr. Farber has published many articles and has been a member of
many organizations. Dr. Farber's ability to develop and maintain
a large practice, and to maintain quality standards, has allowed
him to be a leader in the area of dermatology and dermatologic
cosmetic surgery worldwide. We, at the Burks-Farber Clinics, are
pleased to work with him and for him, take pleasure and countenance
in his constant inexhaustible energy and experience and his kindness
to employees, patients, and friends.
