What Is a DUI?

DUI and other offenses that involve the operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated are considered criminal law matters.

DUI is an acronym for Driving Under the Influence. To date, alcohol is the most common impairing substance. However, all states and the District of Columbia also prohibit driving under the influence of illegal and prescription drugs, other controlled substances and toxic vapors such as huffing or sniffing paint fumes, paint thinner and chemicals that are similar.

Similar to other drunk driving offenses, a person will be guilty of DUI when that individual is in actual physical control of a vehicle and happens to be under these influences to the extent that his or her mental capabilities are impaired and when his or her blood alcohol level (BAC) is higher than the legal limit for that state.
