Safety Tips: Things you should know…
- One out of every six home fires are started by overheated wires. Too many appliances plugged into one cord causes overheating and can cause this. Use extension cords sparingly and on a temporary basis.
- Do not place power cords under carpets or furniture, and never nail or staple cords onto walls, boards, or other objects.
- "Am I playing with fire?" That’s the question you should ask yourself if you look behind your TV and see that the VCR, CD player, cable box, stereo, and tape deck all plugged into each other. Avoid the use of multi-plug sockets.
- Halogen floor lamps operate at much higher temperatures than standard incandescent light bulb lamps. Because of this, never place these lamps where they can come in contact with drapes, clothing, or other combustible materials. Make sure that your halogen lamp has a safety cage over the bulb. This reduces the risk of fire.
- During an electrical storm, do not use any appliances, and only use the telephone if it's an emergency.
- If you see that an outlet or switch wall plate is way too hot to the touch, immediately shut off that circuit and have a professional check it out.
