Leading
a Heart Healthy Life
HDL:
The cholesterol you want more of ....
There's good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. A handy way
to remember which is this: Keep high-density lipoprotein (HDL)
cholesterol HIGH and low-density lipoprotein ( LDL) cholesterol
LOW.
Controlling your cholesterol usually means lowering it, but
that isn't
always the case. Excess LDL in the blood does get deposited
on artery walls, leading to heart disease. But HDL is your
heart's friend. LDL's carry cholesterol away from the liver
to the arteries. HDL's carry cholesterol away from the arteries
to the liver, where it is broken down and released from the
body.
An HDL level below 40 mg/dl is a risk factor for heart disease.
Although
40 mg/dl is generally considered safe, many cardiologists
think that a level
between 50 and 60 mg/dl is safer.
