A Word on Health Insurance

At The Wellness Center, we do not file health insurance. This is a fee-for-service office, and payment is expected at the time of service. The reason for this is that all of the services provided are not covered by health insurance.

Health Insurance Coverage

There are many people who are prescribed treatment for obesity, but their health insurance does not cover or reimburse those services.

Denial of insurance coverage for obesity is difficult to understand because:

• Many insurance companies will pay to treat conditions caused by obesity, such as diabetes and heart disease.
• Most health plans cover numerous conditions, which have neither the mortality nor morbidity associated with them as does obesity.

Managed Care

Most Americans receive their health care through managed care companies or health management organizations. Unfortunately, few managed care companies include treatments for obesity.

Managed care plans are accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). NCQA does not examine services for obesity of any health plan. Addressing obesity is essentially the integrity of a national system of accreditation of managed care providers.

Medicare and Medicaid

Medicare is the federal program that provides health services for the elderly and the disabled. In 2004, the Medicare policy changed to reflect the seriousness of obesity as a medical condition. Previously, Medicare did not consider obesity to be a disease or illness and thus, made no provisions in connection with it.

The Medicaid program is a joint federal/state program for the coverage of the poor and the disadvantaged. Medicaid does not recognize obesity as a disease. However, some states do pay for obesity surgery, although the frequency of such cases and low reimbursement rates indicate that not much surgery is performed.

As you have been informed, The Wellness Center at ImpactHealth is a fee-for-service company for the reasons mentioned above. Treatments such as botox injections and mesotherapy, in addition to an in-house gym and personal trainer, are optional services and are not covered under insurance plans either. We expect payment at the time of service and will provide you with a well-documented receipt. You may file for reimbursement through your health coverage provider at your discretion. A receipt from the office with an appropriate diagnosis code is all you need to complete this task.
