What To Expect When You Are Choosing a Painting Contractor

When you are choosing a painting contractor, there are some things you should do to protect yourself. Make sure they have the proper license to do business. Also, ask about their liability and workers' compensation insurance and request a certificate of insurance directly from the contractors insurance company. Be sure your name and address are on the certificate. Insurance companies will provide this service free, so they can insure that your contractor's policy is in effect while the painters are on your property. Make sure that it's adequate to protect you should an accident take place while the painters are on your property. Most established painting contractors have adequate liability coverage to protect their company and their clients. However, not all contractors carry separate workers' compensation insurance. If you are considering hiring a non-licensed painting contractor, then your own liability may be at stake.

When talking to a contractor, be very specific about what you want to have done. Discuss the type of paint and the number of coats, the paint manufacturer and any warranties that may apply, and the type of preparation work. Get everything in writing, and find out if the price being quoted is a firm one. Give the same information to each contractor, so you can evaluate your bids fairly. Also, ask about scheduling, when they can start your job, and how long it is likely to take.

While selecting a painting contractor, here are a few questions to consider. How long have they been in business, what is their cost estimate for what you want done? Who are their references? Try to get photographs showing samples of their work. A well-established painting contractor should employ professional painters only. The firm should also own and operate its own vehicles and equipment. The contractors should be knowledgeable and willing to service you in any way. Keep in mind there should not be a charge for an estimate. The quote should be in writing and be sure that you clarify any questions or concerns before you approve the work.

When you are hiring a paint contractor take the time to call the paint suppliers. When warranties apply, paint manufacturers have a vested interest as to the quality of the preparation of the surface to be painted, the proper material for the job intended, and proper application of the material. The paint manufacturer will provide warranty specifics as to the proper sealers, numbers of coats, the gallons per square foot needed for proper warranty coverage, and expected length of time the paint should last. Paint suppliers will tell you how long your paint contractor has been doing business with them.

When you are hiring a painter, you might be curious about the tools of their trade. Most experienced painters will have purchased professional grade power painting equipment. Painters may use pieces of equipment unfamiliar to you. Of course, you are familiar with the basics. The brushes and rollers that are the backbone of all painting projects. Professional painters still use them for smaller jobs, trim, and finish work. However, whenever a large area has to be covered, most will also use power equipment. For example, in the preparation phase of an exterior job, many will use a pressure washer to remove loose paint. The availability of airless sprayers, both larger models and smaller handheld units, have sped up painting work considerably. A skilled painter can do an excellent job using this equipment. Especially in larger areas, which are to be painted a single color.

Follow up on the references that are supplied by your painter. Also, before you call for an estimate from painters, inspect the area and remove hazards that could interfere with the job or make it more costly. For example, if you're having the roof painted make sure that tree branches that overhang the area are removed before you call for estimates. It will make the job safer, less costly, and prolong the life of the paint. Also, inform neighbors of the work being done, so they may keep children, pets, and vehicles away.
